Y2k and
Women
"The truth is...no
one really knows for sure. Prepare for the worst, hope for the
best, and weigh the risk of preparation with the risk of non-preparation?"
---George Grindley (State Rep. District 35
Marietta, Georgia)
A July poll of 1,008 adults, conducted for the
AP by ICR of Media, Pa., found that women (38 percent) were much
more likely than men (23 percent) to stock up on supplies.
Stocking just one week's supplies. Balderdash! A story from
the perspective of experience.

Bonnie
Camp is a wise woman , the sort we treasure. She's the Y2k analyst
who can not only analyze the NERC electricity compliance
figures for the EUY2k site http://www.energyland.net,
but has as her bio there "Bonnie Camp is simply
a lady with an enduring curiosity, a conviction that the Year
2000 problem has the potential to cause severe disruptions, and
a determination to unearth as many facts as she can find to shed
light on what those disruptions might or might not be. Bonnie
has been married to a wonderful man for 31 years, has four grown
children and six young grandchildren. She is passionate about
books, learning and tea, in that order, and she has the conviction
that dust is not fatal and dishes are not worth doing until there
is a sink full of them."

for Women -- The Year 2000 Computer Problem: What Every Woman
Needs to Know and How to Keep Herself and Her Family Safe"
Karen Anderson's site is oriented to women, many of whom
are trying to prepare for Y2k without support from the rest of
their families. Friendly, compassionate and pragmatic advice.
If a woman you know doesn't know where to begin, this may be
the first place to send her.

A natural
gum rubber menstrual cap (rather like a cervical cap)
that provides an alternative to tampons and pads.
Have
you also checked your supply of contraceptives to make
sure they are current?

Another
woman-oriented Y2k site, perhaps a little more back-to-the-land
than Karen Anderson's site.

August 18,
1999. [National Public Radio] "Y2K and Women -- When
people first got an inkling that computers might hiccup on December
31, 1999, so-called 'information technology' experts figured
the repair job would be a low-status job. At least that's one
theory on why so many women are now the Y2K experts in corporate
America. In any case, NPR's Margot Adler reports that with Y2K
now a high-profile problem, the high number of women in charge
of fixing it has made a dent in the glass ceiling. "(7:00)
