Information on
Y2k planning that affects Olivebridge, Shokan, West Shokan, Ashokan,
Boiceville, Samsonville, Krumville and other nearby Ulster
County communities such as Woodstock. We can't head for the hills,
we're already there.
We have a real hunger for leadership,
especially with complicated issues like this. Sometimes
on a very basic level, people are willing to give up any sense
of taking responsibility. Somebody else is going to mind the
store. One local Y2k activist went to a Y2k meeting in a public
building. The roll of toilet paper in the rest room wasn't on
the roller, it was just sitting on the tank waiting for someone
in authority to replace it, or maybe for Mom to do it. She replaced
it. Are you waiting for Mom to do the Y2k work for you?
Who's minding the store?
Who's making the decisions that impact on your family's well-being
in very real ways?
What leadership are you willing to take on that you haven't taken
on before? What is the truth, what are the consequences?
If you decide that nothing challenging will happen with Y2k,
and you are wrong, what consequences are you prepared to have
your family experience? None of us are experienced in planning
for Y2k, nothing like this has happened so globally. We all will
be surprised, we can't guarantee that the surprises will be pleasant.
We're hoping real hard that things will be OK.
You will have to decide what your plan of action is. No-one can
make your decisions for you. You have your personal comfort level
to consider, and that of your family. You will have to make informed
choices, and decide what level of trust you are going to give
to the words of strangers. We hope that some of the information
that we have presented on this website will have helped you in
those hard decisions.
What can you do to help others in your community deal with any
problems caused by Y2k?
Educate yourself. Help educate others. Spread the word.
Go to local meetings. While knowledge of the subject
in the global sense is good, your local Y2k planning groups are
a vital part of community preparedness.
Help put up flyers about Y2k awareness and meetings in your town.
Bring your own tape and tacks, and please take them down and
recycle them when the event is over. Note which places do not
allow commercial flyers yet might put up information for non-profit
groups. Make a list (click for Olive list)
of the stops to make to put up flyers, organized by neighborhoods
or villages, with checkmark areas to note that each place has
been covered. Make copies for all in your group. Circulate to
any other groups that might have to put up information, maybe
even put up on the Web so that local flyer distributors can download
a copy as needed. Drop off flyers at local rummage sales
and other events that attract a lot of people. Make up a display
board on Y2k that can be exhibited locally. Assist in furnishing
Y2k speakers to local civic groups, senior centers etc.

Next
time your local legislators come up for re-election, remember
to ask what Y2k leadership they provided during these challenging
times. We don't recall any of the Ulster County legislators showed
up at the big "community conversations" meeting on
July 27, though we were very pleased to see town officials
from Denning, Woodstock, and Olive in attendence.

Residents of Ulster County: are there preparations
for Y2k that your town is making (or NOT making) that you
would like publicized on this website? Please contact [email protected]
to discuss this with us.
How well has your school system communicated with parents
and the taxpayers who fund the system about how Y2k compliant
the school system is? Does it appear to be an issue that
has come up at school board meetings? How responsive have board
members or principals been when asked about the schools' Y2k
status?
This sample letter gives a range of
questions you might want to ask your local school officials.
This particular letter is copyright free, and permission is freely
granted to reproduce it and send it to your own local education
officials. For those of you in the Onteora school system, you
should know that on August 5 copies were taken by one parent
to the Board of Education offices to be given to the Superintendent
of Schools, all the Board of Education members, and the school
principals. As of October 1 there has been an acknowledgement
of the letter, but no substantive response. |
